New Classroom Building for Hillingdon Council

Supply and installation of aluminium windows, doors and feature surrounds on a new-build classroom facility in Uxbridge

Project Overview

Hillingdon Council needed additional classroom space to accommodate growing pupil numbers, delivering a substantial new-build classroom facility on Royal Lane, Uxbridge, adjoining an existing school. Weatherite Aluminium Solutions (WASL) was appointed to supply and install all of the aluminium windows and doors for the new building, along with a set of feature surrounds designed to give it a distinct architectural identity while sitting comfortably alongside the neighbouring school.

The Challenge

As a new-build structure rather than a refurbishment, the project gave the design team a blank canvas — but also meant there were no existing systems or savings to fall back on; every window, door and surround had to be specified, manufactured and installed from scratch to meet the performance, safety and aesthetic standards expected of a modern education environment.

Working immediately adjacent to a live school brought its own demands. Installation had to be carefully sequenced around the main build programme, with particular attention paid to safety, security and minimising disruption to staff and pupils next door.

The Weatherite Solution

WASL supplied and installed a full package of aluminium glazing across the new building, including:

• All new aluminium windows throughout the classroom facility, using Metal Technology System 4-35/5-35 Hi+ — an enhanced thermally broken, 3-box aluminium window and vent system
• All new aluminium doors, using Metal Technology System 10-35 Hi PAS24 — a thermally broken commercial door system
• Feature surrounds to the principal elevations, adding visual interest and a strong architectural finish to the new build

Glazing specifications were varied across the building to suit its range of multi-use teaching spaces, including acoustic glazing rated up to 42dB to the music rooms.

Technical Feature

A key design feature of the scheme was the use of colour coded, full projecting feature surrounds fitted to all windows across the building. Projecting proud of the facade rather than sitting flush, the surrounds add real depth and shadow line to the elevations, giving the new build a strong, contemporary identity that sets it apart from a standard window installation.

The Result

The new building has given Hillingdon Council the additional classroom capacity it needed, with a striking set of aluminium windows, doors and feature surrounds that complement the existing school while giving the new facility its own identity.
